Education & Youth

We have made great strides in education during the past several years. Education reform has been at the forefront of our public schools and I have been a strong supporter of the system’s mayoral takeover and of both our previous and current Chancellor. I am also encouraged by the charter school movement and the new community college at the University of the District of Columbia. I also recognize the importance of pre-K for all and will continue to ensure this opportunity is available to all District children.

We have seen test scores rise, another position positive reflection of the direction we are taking. Our neighborhood schools like Ross, Hyde-Addison, and Garrison Elementary thrive thanks to the efforts of hard-working and dedicated parent and community volunteers. We must work to ensure that every District resident, young and old, has access to the best education available. Our young people deserve nothing less than to have access to programs and activities that keep them learning and engaged year round.

With the opening of the Community College of DC, we have initiated an exciting chapter in readying District residents for work. The new campus, located at H and North Capital streets, is a prime location, easily accessible via bus, Metro, and bike. I look forward to CCDC continuing to partner with our Department of Employment Services to get our residents back to work.

The future of the District depends on our ability to provide quality education for our children, from pre-K all the way through college. I will continue to fight to make sure our schools are adequately funded, our teachers and principals held accountable, our school facilities top notch, and our children getting what they deserve — the very best.
