Public Safety
The safety of our residents is of the utmost importance. Everyone should have the ability to enjoy peace, order, and quiet without fear of crime. I have worked tirelessly over the years to make sure Ward 2 has gotten the attention it needs from the Metropolitan Police Department.
My record on public safety has been strong. We must have an adequately sized police force knowledgeable of the community it serves and the streets it patrols. Community-based policing, which I have long supported, has made a significant impact on crime, with homicide rates now at an all-time low. I have consistently fought for adequate funding of MPD’s reimbursable detail, which helps to provide Ward 2 with a nightlife that is vibrant and safe for all. I launched the Anti-Prostitution Task Force, which has made incredible progress over the years stemming prostitution in Logan Circle and Downtown.
We still face significant challenges — theft and burglaries are up, hate crimes are on the rise, and we still confront obstacles in recruiting and retaining sworn officers and maintaining an adequately staffed force. I will work with MPD, civic groups and ANCs, and residents from around Ward 2 to make sure we continue the progress we have seen in the past while addressing the challenges ahead.
